Residents in recovery from substance use, plus people who simply prefer alcohol-and-drug-free environments. Some residents are in active 12-step programs; others have just decided not to drink. Demographics are mixed but skew 28-45 and over-index on professionals in high-stress industries (medicine, finance, tech).
Substance-free common areas (often including the streets immediately outside the building), structured weekly group conversations (12-step meetings or facilitator-led), and a no-questions-asked policy on residents needing space. Operators are typically very careful about screening — you'll go through an interview process before joining.
Choose sober coliving when removing alcohol from the daily environment is part of your recovery plan or simple preference. The community structure (where everyone has the same baseline) is the differentiator vs. ordinary coliving where you'd be opting out of social rituals constantly. Pairs well with cities where wellness culture supports the lifestyle.
